Grimes, IA (May 4, 2011) – After coming only eight laps short of winning his third consecutive NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race, Brett Moffitt, driver of the No. 00 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota, headed to Richmond, VA for the Blue Ox 100. Moffitt mounted a late race charge in the closing laps, but had to settle for a hard-earned second place finish.

“We are very pleased with our run tonight,” Moffitt said. “Usually, anything other than a win is disappointing, but we worked so hard on the car and improved it throughout the race. The whole team is to be commended for their efforts at Richmond.”

Although he had not competed at Richmond International Raceway previously, Moffitt was able to adapt to the short track immediately, earning the quickest speed in the morning’s practice session.  In the final practice, the Michael Waltrip Racing team focused on making the car handle better on longer runs under race conditions, but still managed to be fifth quickest.

During qualifying, Moffitt’s car was loose, but his speed was fast enough to earn him the fifth quickest lap, with a time of 22.262 seconds (121.283 mph) around the three-quarter mile track.

“We knew heading into qualifying that our car was set up in race trim at night,” Moffitt said.  “I actually think we posted a pretty good qualifying time, but the temperature dropped late in the session, so we were bumped down the chart by cars that qualified after the track surface cooled.”

At the drop of the green flag, Moffitt began pressuring the cars in front of him; however, the race was halted on lap 29 due to rain.  When the red flag was displayed, Moffitt was running in fifth and fighting a “very loose” racecar.

During the rain delay, Moffitt had a chance to discuss the track with team owner, Michael Waltrip. When the race restarted, after a 1 hour and 48 minute rain delay, Moffitt began trying new lines around the race track. The new lines paid dividends, and Moffitt began to mount a charge.

On lap 93, Moffitt was in a tight battle for the second position, but during that battle, the leader was able to stretch his margin.  After completing the pass for second, with only a few laps remaining, Moffitt ran out of time to catch the leader.

“I really had fun racing here,” Moffitt said.  “I am so glad we had good luck this weekend and brought it home in one piece. A lot of the Cup and Nationwide teams were here, so it was nice to put on a good run for them, and hopefully, to impress them.”

The Richmond race is scheduled to air on SPEED on Thursday, May 19th at 6 PM EST.

With his second place finish, Moffitt is now only thirteen points behind second place in the season championship point standings, heading into what he considers his home track at Iowa Speedway in Newton, IA on May 21.

“I am really excited to head home,” Moffitt said.  “I haven’t been home since March, so it will be nice to catch up with my family and friends.”
